Benue State Ministry of Justice is essentially a professional and service oriented ministry established to render legal services to the government of Benue State and all its agencies.
The Ministry is very imperative for the smooth running of the machinery of government in general and the administration of justice in particular.
1. To render proficient legal advisory services to the government of Benue State, thus covering all ministries, departments, parastatal, the state legislature and the judiciary with the view to attaining social and legal justice, public order, public security and good governance in the state. And also render similar services to the Nigerian police in Benue State in criminal justice administration.
2. To initiate, takeover and continue or maintain criminal prosecution(including appeals) of all State offences(and some federal), in Magistrate courts, Tribunals, High courts, Federal High Courts, Courts of Appeals and the Supreme Court.
3. To prosecute and defend(as the case may be) all civil rights and other proceedings in which the Benue State government is a party or has substantial interest in any part of Nigeria in all courts and tribunals throughout the country..
4. To represent the interest of Benue State government in all legal matters whenever they may arise.
5. To complement the judiciary in the administration of justice to all.
6. To establish and maintain area Chambers and Rent Tribunals in all Benue State Local Government Areas where there is a High Court Division.
7. To act as Administrator-General and Public Trustee in the administration of estates of deceased persons in Benue State.
8. To establish marriage registries and conduct and register marriages under the marriage act.
became the pioneer Resident Judge, a position he held until the creation of Benue State in 1976.
was lelevated to the position of a Judge of the Benue State High Court albeit in acting capacity, on the 1st August, 1978 and rose to the exalted position of the Chief Judge of the State on the 14th May, 1985.
was appointed to the High Court Bench on 1st October, 1980. He died in 1987 while still in office.
was appointed Judge of the High Court on 1st February, 1981 and was murdered in December, 1986.
was elevated to the High Court Bench on the 1st November, 1984.
That elevation in 1984 was followed by that of Hon. Justice E. O. Ogbole and S. O. Ochimana on the 21st January, 1986.
was appointed to the High Court Bench on the 30th June, 1987.
were elevated to the High Court Bench on the 20th February, 1989.
(who was later deployed to Kogi State) and J. S. Ikyegh had their turn on the 27th March, 1991, while Hon. Justice A. O. Onum was appointed on 1st August, the same year.
were appointed Judges of the High Court on the 30th November, 1995.
